Brittney Griner is no stranger to controversies. Following her arrest a few months ago, she is currently facing a prison sentence in Russia. But this isn’t the first time she’s made headlines.
Griner made headlines a few years back when she voiced her disapproval of the National Anthem and even refused to stand when it was being played. Moreover, her marriage with fellow WNBA player Glory Johnson was highly contentious.
In May 2015, the couple tied the knot. Three weeks before their wedding, Johnson and Griner were detained after claims that they had both attacked each other. Their relationship was already tumultuous, and Johnson’s pregnancy just fueled the fire.
As per Essentiallysports, Glory Johnson announced that she was pregnant just a month after the two tied the knot. The very next day, Brittney Griner filed for the annulment of their marriage amidst much backlash for her actions.
In her statement, Brittney said, “Last Wednesday, Glory and I agreed to either legally separate, get divorced, or annul our marriage. I can confirm that today I filed for an annulment.”
Moreover, Johnson released a statement of her own following her pregnancy. “Being a professional athlete that plays year round, there is never a perfect time to get pregnant without putting my career on hold”, said the WNBA star while confirming that she will not play that season.
Who is Brittney Griner married to now?
Cherelle Griner, Brittney Griner’s wife, has been a huge source of support as she serves a tough 9-year sentence in Russia. The two met while they were both attending Baylor University.
After her split with Gloria Johnson, Griner married Cherelle in 2019. Although the two had known one another since their university days, their relationship only began in 2016. After some time together, Griner proposed to Cherelle in 2018.
