Christy Carlson Romano is opening up about a frightening health update, and the former Disney Channel star did not hold back when sharing the emotional news with fans.
In an Instagram video she posted, Romano revealed that she recently took a cancer screening test alongside her husband, Brendan Rooney, after the couple went in for health testing “the other day.” While her husband received reassuring news, Romano’s results were much more alarming.
“My husband’s [results] came back completely negative. Mine did not come back negative,” Romano, 41, said while getting emotional. She explained that her doctors want her to move forward quickly with additional testing. “The next steps are to get a PET scan [but] I’m fighting with companies to get that covered.”

Romano also shared why this situation feels especially heavy for her. Cancer, she said, runs through her family. Both of her parents have faced it, and while her mother ultimately “beat it,” Romano said her father “eventually didn’t.” She also revealed that her maternal grandmother died of lung cancer, adding another painful layer to the moment.
After explaining her own test results, Romano reflected on the recent death of actor James Van Der Beek, who died last week at the age of 48 following a battle with colorectal cancer. She said she knew the “Dawson’s Creek” star personally since they both lived in Texas with their families.
“I live in Austin, and I was able to meet James Van Der Beek a bunch. His family’s amazing. He’s a pillar of our community in Texas,” Romano shared. “They always were raising money for the most amazing charities, and he’s not with us anymore. Cancer is everywhere. Which is why I got this test.”
Romano admitted she is still processing the results, describing herself as being in “disbelief.” Even so, she said she is trying not to let the fear consume her and is staying focused on upcoming work, including her memoir and a film project.
“[This is a] very vulnerable time for me,” Romano said. “About 367 days since I got shot in the face.” She was referencing the February incident when she was “shot in the face” while shooting clay pigeons for her husband’s birthday. At the time, she said she was “grateful to be alive.”
Romano, who shares daughters Isabella, 9, and Sophia, 7, with Rooney, said she is staying grounded through faith. “It’s time to have a strong sense of faith and know that it’s in God’s hands, most of it. I’m sure people think I’m overreacting, but I’m not, because cancer is pretty serious, and I have two little girls,” she said.
In the caption, she admitted she felt “nervous and a bit scared” about sharing publicly, worried it might come off as “cringe.” “I’m going in for a PET scan later this week, and hopefully it’s something easy to treat,” she wrote. Her husband responded with support, writing, “You got this my beautiful wife.”
