Macclesfield footballer Ethan McLeod has died aged 21 following a road traffic accident on the M1, the club has confirmed. The forward was returning home after Macclesfield’s 2-1 victory over Bedford Town on Tuesday night when the crash occurred.
McLeod, who came through the Wolverhampton Wanderers academy, was driving back from the match at around 10.40 pm when his white Mercedes was involved in a collision near junction 15 for Northampton. Police said the vehicle struck a nearside metal barrier. Despite assistance from members of the public and emergency services, McLeod was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident led to the closure of the M1 overnight, with the road reopening at approximately 7.30 am on Wednesday morning. Police are continuing their investigation and have appealed for witnesses, asking anyone with dashcam footage or further information to come forward.
Macclesfield paid tribute to McLeod in an emotional statement released on Wednesday afternoon, describing the scale of the loss felt throughout the club, as per BBC.
“Ethan was an incredibly talented and well-respected member of our First Team Squad, who had his whole life ahead of him,” the club said. “But more than that, Ethan’s infectious personality endeared him to everyone that he came into contact with.
“In giving his all in everything he did, Ethan effortlessly pushed us all to be the best we can be – both on and off the pitch. Ethan’s professionalism and unwavering work ethic inspired everyone, and his lust for life put smiles on all our faces – even on the darkest of days.”

The non-league side said the tragedy had left the club in shock, adding: “News of Ethan’s passing has devastated our entire Club and no words can convey the immense sense of sadness and loss that we feel now.
“The deep mental scars elicited from Ethan’s passing will undeniably never heal but one thing is for sure, and that is Ethan’s vibrant legacy will never fade, no matter how much time passes in the future.”
The statement continued with a message to McLeod’s loved ones and teammates. “Ethan will live in our hearts and minds forevermore… Our deepest sympathy goes out to Ethan’s family and friends at this deeply traumatic time… May you rest in peace, Ethan – you will forever be a Silkman.”
Tributes also came from across the football world. Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand wrote on X: “Sending love to Ethan’s family + friends.”
McLeod spent a decade in Wolves’ academy before spells at Alvechurch, Rushall Olympic and Stourbridge. He signed for National League North side Macclesfield in July, beginning what many believed would be a promising new chapter in his career.
