Sofía Vergara has opened up about her determination to help her mother stay healthy, while revealing her own ambition to live to 100.
The Modern Family star, 53, spoke candidly about her family’s history of health issues and explained why she has become a strong advocate for monitoring and managing long-term conditions, particularly for her mother, Margarita, who is in her 70s and lives with high blood pressure.
Speaking to People, Vergara described herself as her mother’s “health advocate”, explaining that she regularly reminds her about the importance of taking her condition seriously. She admitted the role can sometimes be challenging, joking that her mother can be “stubborn”, but said she remains committed to helping her stay as healthy as possible.
The actress said the issue is particularly personal because hypertension and diabetes have affected several members of her family. Although she does not have high blood pressure herself, Vergara said she remains vigilant due to her family history and believes it is important for people to educate themselves about potential health risks.

Vergara is currently working with pharmaceutical company Boehringer Ingelheim’s Detect the SOS campaign, which aims to raise awareness about the health risks associated with high blood pressure and diabetes, including kidney disease. Through the initiative, she is encouraging people to ask questions about their health and seek appropriate screening tests.
The actress also said the campaign is especially meaningful to her as a Latina woman because hypertension and diabetes disproportionately affect many people in the Latino community. She hopes her involvement will encourage others to take a more active role in managing their health.
Looking ahead, Vergara said she wants both she and her mother to enjoy long, healthy lives. While noting that one of her great-aunts lived to 106, the actress settled on a slightly more modest target for herself.
“I want to age very well. I want to look good, and I want to feel good,” Vergara said, adding that she would be “happy with 100.”
